The Cornelius Corps Covenant

The Cornelius Corps provides opportunities to build bridges of transforming relationships among suburban and inner city Christians through the gift of the Holy Spirit, which we share. The name is taken from the story of Cornelius and Peter in Acts 10-11. God led these two men to experience their unity in the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ despite differences in their ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds (cf. Acts 11:17). God continues to lead Christians to experience our unity in Christ across the barriers that separate people in our society. The Cornelius Corps is a vehicle for bringing people together in Christ across the barriers that separate the inner city and the suburbs in the Washington, D.C. area. The Cornelius Corps is a ministry of New Community Church, which is a congregation in the tradition of the Church of the Saviour.

The Cornelius Corps Covenant is comprised of two parts, which are reviewed annually:

  1. Partnership with the local church
  2. Partnership with persons who participate directly in ministries associated with the Cornelius Corps

Covenant of Partnership with the Local Church

  1. The Cornelius Corps makes a commitment to provide the local church with opportunities to identify and support persons who are called to develop relationships across the barriers that separate inner city and suburban people.
  2. The local church makes a commitment to inform their members of The Cornelius Corps and to provide opportunities for persons to engage in ministries associated with The Cornelius Corps.
  3. The local church makes a commitment of financial support to the Cornelius Corps. Covenant member churches make an annual commitment of at least $5,000.

Covenant of Partnership with Participants

  1. Participants make a commitment to prepare for ministry through classes, seminars, and/or site visits that provide Biblical foundations for and orientation to ministries associated with The Cornelius Corps. The Cornelius Corps will provide the opportunities for this preparation.
  2. Participants make a commitment to participate in a ministry associated with The Cornelius Corps. Each person works with discerning the particular ministry to which he/she is called and makes a commitment to participate in that ministry for a specific period of time. The Cornelius Corps will provide guidance as persons work with issues of discernment and ministry placement.
  3. Participants make a commitment to integrate their ministry experience into their growth as disciples of Jesus Christ. Each person participates in reflection and sharing based on her/his ministry experience. The Cornelius Corps will help to establish settings for reflection and sharing.
