A Journey Across the Bridge Building transforming relationships among suburban and inner city people is the goal of a new ministry in our area. The major focus of Rev. Jim Melson (former pastor of Christ Crossman United Methodist Church in Falls Church,Va.) is the development of a ministry called The Cornelius Corps (Acts 10:1 – 11:18). The mission statement of this ministry is as follows: The Cornelius Corps is a faith-based ministry, which provides opportunities to build bridges of transforming relationships among suburban and inner city people through experiences of education, service, and fellowship. Congregations that participate in The Cornelius Corps are invited to share in opportunities such as: | |
Trips to the inner city of Washington D.C. to discover the strengths and gifts of urban people and neighborhoods that are so often neglected in the media depictions of the city. |
Classes and Seminars that explore various aspects of the Biblical call to build transforming relationships across the barriers of our society. |
Volunteer service opportunities in locations in the Adams Morgan, Shaw, and Anacostia neighborhoods of the city. |
Shared experiences of worship, prayer, and study among inner city and suburban people. |

The Cornelius Corps: Local Church Relationships
| Background:The Cornelius Corps provides opportunities to build bridges of transforming relationships among suburban and inner city Christians through the gift of the Holy Spirit, which we share. The name is taken from the story of Cornelius and Peter in Acts 10-11. God led these two men to experience their unity in the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ despite differences in their ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds (cf Acts 11:17). God continues to lead Christians to experience our unity in Christ across barriers that separate people in our society. The Cornelius Corps is a vehicle for bringing people together across the barriers that separate the inner city and the suburbs in the Washington, D.C. area. The Cornelius Corps is a ministry of New Community Church, which is a congregation in the tradition of the Church of the Saviour. |
Participation: Local churches can participate in the Cornelius Corps by making a commitment to relate as Covenant Members or Supporting Members. These two categories represent different levels of commitment for both the church and The Cornelius Corps. A general description of these relationships is outlined below. Both categories of relationship are renewable on an annual basis. |
